Carlin's Work (Question 1)
What do you notice about the language, the punctuation and the sentence structure?
The Game:
From the writer’s personal recount, I noticed that the language used was quite detailed in terms of how the writer described things. I can also infer from the language used that the writer perceived that the shop keeper is trying to charge her more money because of greed and the desire to earn more money. The use of adjectives and adverbs are frequently used which makes the personal recount seem alive. She is very expressive and language used is passive. Of course, nouns are used and speeches are in reported speeches too.
With regards to the punctuation, i think it’s awesome because the use of punctuation is acceptable; not too much like some writers do, in order to connect numerous sentences into one, which sometimes make the whole sentence awkward.
The sentence structure is summarized and straight to the point. The sentence structure is joined by two or more simple sentences by a coordinating conjunction. The thoughts of the writer are expressed clearly in the sentence structure. The use of past tense to relate her experience is evident from the blog.
River Cruise:
From the writer’s personal recount, I noticed that the language used was quite brief in terms of how the writer described her trip. It is also informal; which kind of portray that this is a journal. The writer expresses her feelings throughout the whole trip through the use of adverbs and adjectives. This really makes the things she say seem alive. Reported speeches are also used and passive voice is also used where appropriate. Not to forget, the use of connectors is often touched on.
With regards to the punctuation aspect, I strongly feel that the use of commas is appropriate and that they are used to connect many sentences together to make the post summarized. Though it’s summarized, we can still get the feel of the things she’s talking about through detailed descriptions.
The sentence structure is brief. It is joined by many simple sentences by conjunctions. However, it does not seem awkward as the writer knows when to stop using connectors. This makes what she has written excellent. I think the sentence structure aspect is really well done; though it’s a kind of journal.
Jun Hiang's Work (Question 2)
Can you talk about this writing in terms of plot or character? Why or why not?
The Game:
The writer is full if character. She is full of tenacity, determination and a bit thick-headed and stubborn, but in a good sense. Her blog shows explicitly her feelings and the situation that is going on and it is as if you were witnessing the entire thing happening. The plot is exciting and thrilling, and just by reading her plight, I can feel the anger she must have felt at that moment and the disappointment at how dishonest people can be for just a bit of money and gain. Their greediness is astonishing and the resentment can be felt strongly against them. She made her stand in the end and triumphed over the shop keeper. Such a person is one who is independent and stands up for herself and will not bow down to pressure or difficulties.
River Cruise:
The writer is a sentimental person as can be seen from the fact that she wanted to visit Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala which was where her father was born and raised. The plot is very detailed and talks into the places they have been to, the things they did and reasons why they went there also reveal that the writer is very organised and systematic. From the writer’s enthusiasm of the trip and the disability to forget it, we can tell that she enjoyed the trip thoroughly and would like to go again. Hence, the writer is one who enjoys leisure but is both organised, systematic and has a great memory. She lets her emotion make her decisions, showing that she is most sentimental.
Charlotte's Work (Question 4)
Does it have an orientation with background information about who, where, when?
The Game:
There was not really any background information about the writer, where the writer was and when. If one paid enough attention, one could deduce from the information given that the writer was from a different country than the one she was in. Also, she was in India, on a holiday. But, one cannot be sure as there is no concrete evidence in that entry.
River Cruise:
There was background information about the places in the entry but there were no information about who the writer was and when the situations in this blog entry took place. There is not enough information in this entry to deduce who the writer was. As to when the situations took place, there is also no information about it.
Jia Qian's Work (Question 6)
Does it have some personal comment on the events either during or at the end of the recount?
The Game:
“The game” includes a lot of personal comments on the event of the author being “ripped off” by a shopkeeper when she was buying a sari and this could be seen when she when she criticize shopkeepers of taking advantage of the fact that she was ignorant about the cost of their goods and also through her observation of the sari that she bought that was stiff and starchy.
River Cruise:
The author of “river cruise” has also included a lot of personal comments on her visits to the different places.
